Arnaud Sussmann, violin, has performed as a soloist with orchestras throughout Europe and was recently accepted into the Chamber Music Society Two of Lincoln Center. Mr. Sussmann has won first prizes at the International Andrea Postacchini Competition in Fermo, Italy and the Vatelot/Rampal International competition in his native France. Mr. Sussmann holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from The Juilliard School and is currently pursuing his studies with Itzhak Perlman. His 2010 Mainly Mozart Spotlight Series performances mark his Mainly Mozart debut.

Cynthia Phelps, viola, has been Principal Violist with the New York Philharmonic since 1992. She has appeared throughout the world as soloist and in recital in Paris, Rome, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, and at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, and St. David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales. Ms. Phelps regularly appears with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Boston Chamber Music Society. She is first-prize winner of both the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Washington International String Competition, and the recipient of the Pro Musicis International award. She made her Mainly Mozart debut in 1989 during the first Mainly Mozart Festival and returns frequently.

Ronald Thomas, cello, is Principal Cello of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra. He has appeared with major symphony orchestras as soloist and recitalist in the U.S. and abroad, including those of St. Louis, Baltimore, Seattle, Philadelphia and Hong Kong. He is Co-Founder and former Artistic Director of the Boston Chamber Music Society, Artistic Director of Chestnut Hill Concerts and has a long involvement with Bargemusic in New York City.

Anton Nel, piano, has been a Mainly Mozart Festival artist since the first Festival in 1989. He made his debut at age 12 in South Africa with Beethoven’s C Major Concerto after only two years of study. After winning First Prize in the Naumburg International Piano Competition, he has appeared with many American orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco and Detroit Symphonies, and the Boston Pops. In 1997, Mr. Nel gave the American premiere of Mendelssohn’s newly discovered Third Concerto.

BICE Restaurante is located in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, BICE diners immediately feel the welcoming atmosphere. A soft, muted color-palette accented with dark wood paneling is complemented by modern furniture that creates both a cozy and luxurious feel. The menu changes weekly and includes Antipasti courses such as a thinly sliced mosaic of octopus; fresh salmon, sea bass and tuna tartar. Tuesday, January 26, from 6-9PM, Gentlemen's Martini Night and the San Diego Historical Society are hosting Ben Gomez of "Don't ask Don't Tell" (Service members Legal Defense Network) and Albert Ogle of Equality California. The San Diego G&L Bar Association will attend in their capacity regarding Anti-discriminatin law.

All gallery spaces will be open for people. On view: San Diego Style, the museum's most recent costume exhibition. Place of Promise: Stories of San Diego…highlights San Diego’s earliest beginnings from the Kumeyaay through 1870s. 100 Years of Art: A Retrospective….featuring a vast array of fine artworks created by San Diego artists, including Belle Baranceanu, Alfred Mitchell, Maurice Braun and others. A Different Life…chronicles the life experiences of 9 Somali girls who fled their homeland to reside in America. Dressing A City: Selected Styles from Marston’s Department Store…showcases the history of Marston’s Department Store in its heyday 1946-1961.

In addition, computers will be available to view the collection of historic photos, with capacity for people to order reproduction prints on line.

Staff members will be on hand to answer people’s questions about the exhibition, general history of San Diego, ordering prints, etc.

There will be a no host bar and complimentary hors d'oeuvres for everyone's enjoyment.

Please note: The entrance fee for this special GMN event will be $10.00. Part of the proceeds from this event are being donated to Service members Legal Defense Network, Equality California, and the San Diego Historical Society.

Riveting love story, Bent begins tomorrow
A co-production with ion theatre company

Yellow stars. Pink triangles. Dignity. Courage. Comfort. Survival. A riveting story of love in the midst of the Holocaust. This 1979 play about gays under persecution by the Nazis took the world stage by storm. Profoundly universal and provocatively theatrical, this co-production commemorates the 30th anniversary of the seminal play by Martin Sherman. Co-directed by Glenn Paris and Claudio Raygoza, the play features Chris Buess, Eric Dowdy, Philip John, Stephen Lone, Charlie Reuter, Walter Ritter, Bobby Schiefer and Michael Zlotnik.
Contains brief nudity.

Prior to Bent, there had been virtually no inclusion of gays in discussions about the Holocaust. It had a groundbreaking impact when it was first staged off-Broadway in 1978; an impact that continued when the play was performed in London the next year and then finally brought to Broadway. The uniqueness of the story line and the strength of its message about tolerance, love, and human dignity made the play successful. It was nominated for both a Pulitzer and a Tony in 1980.

The whole idea of this glamorous nightspot, which also has locations in Walnut Creek and San Diego, might have been dreamed up for this locale. After all, Crosby was a popular desert figure both on the golf courses and in Palm Springs nightclubs, and the sleek '30s and '40s nostalgia fits well with the mid-century Modernist design style the Palm Springs area has claimed as its own. The owners describe the food as “California country club,” but it is the best sort of country club, safe but not stuffy, sporting French, Italian and Asian touches. The barbecued duck crêpes are a satisfying appetizer, while the lamb three ways (grilled, roasted and braised) would satisfy even the hungriest golfer. For dessert, there's a platter of fresh fruits and imported cheeses for the health-conscious, while those who aren't worried about calories might indulge in the crème brûlée de quad---featuring four flavors---or coffee and donuts, with cinnamon sugar beignets and mocha ice cream cappuccino. The wine list leans heavily on California vintners, and offers some impressive choices, from Kosta Browne and Bonaccorsi Pinot Noirs to Quintessa, Opus One and Rubicon Meritage bottles.
